One area. Three ways to use it.
Start with the space you actually want to change. A play lawn, a pet area, and a seating patio serve different purposes, even when they have the same square footage. Choose a surface that fits the way you plan to use the yard, then use the cost comparison to understand the installation budget.
Sod creates a living lawn. Artificial turf creates a synthetic grass surface. Pavers create a firm outdoor surface for uses such as seating and walking. The comparison treats these as alternatives for the same area; it does not add all three together or estimate an entire landscape renovation.
Measure the project before comparing prices
For a rectangular area, multiply length by width using the same unit for both measurements. For an irregular yard, divide the plan into smaller rectangles, calculate each section, and add only the areas receiving the new surface. Subtract permanent beds, buildings, and other spaces outside the work.
Keep the finished area separate from the amount of material you order. Cutting, edges, and awkward shapes can require additional material. A contractor or supplier should confirm the order quantity from the actual layout; an area estimate cannot replace a turf roll layout or a paver cutting plan.
Choose a more detailed cost guide
For a natural lawn, explore sod installation costs and the difference between new sod on a prepared site and replacing an existing lawn. Soil condition and the work needed before laying grass matter as much as the visible surface.
For a synthetic lawn, read about artificial turf cost per square foot. A grass-roll price and a professionally installed system cover different things, so compare their scope before comparing their numbers.
Planning vehicle access instead? Use the concrete driveway cost calculator for a separate driveway budget and a geometric concrete-volume estimate. A patio surface estimate is not a specification for a driveway.
Turn a planning range into a useful quote request
Share the measured area, photographs, desired surface, and access constraints with local contractors. Ask whether the price includes removing the old surface, preparing the ground, delivering materials, installing edges, and hauling debris away. A cheaper quote can simply contain less work.
Keep drainage changes, irrigation work, major grading, permit costs, and taxes separate unless they are explicitly included in a written proposal. The calculator shows its own exclusions beside the result. Read our cost methodology to understand how the published ranges are selected and where they stop being useful.
Common questions
Does this estimate my entire backyard renovation?
No. It estimates the selected surface for the area you enter. Plants, fences, lighting, drainage redesign, and other landscape work need their own scope and budget. If you have several separate areas, estimate each one and check with contractors for shared delivery or setup costs before combining quotes.
Are these prices specific to my ZIP code?
No. Default prices are US planning ranges. Local labor, access, material availability, and site conditions affect quotes. If you have a local installed unit price, use the matching price override and check that its inclusions match the project you are estimating.
Which surface is cheapest over time?
Installation cost alone cannot answer that. A useful long-term comparison also needs local water costs, maintenance, repair, replacement, and how you use the yard. This version compares installation budgets and does not claim to calculate lifetime savings.
Should I use the low end as my final budget?
Treat both ends as planning scenarios, not guaranteed bids. Start by checking the exclusions and identifying site work that the model does not price. Use comparable written local quotes before committing to materials or construction.
