Artificial turf installation cost by area
These examples use the same installed rates as the calculator. They assume a straightforward professional installation, with no extra removal quote or local price override.
| Project area | Estimated installed cost |
|---|---|
| 400 sq ft | $4,000–$10,000 |
| 500 sq ft | $5,000–$12,500 |
| 1,000 sq ft | $10,000–$25,000 |
Small-job minimums, delivery terms, and site conditions can change the price. A published range is a starting point for comparing written quotes, not a local offer.
Material price versus installed price
A turf product listing usually describes the synthetic grass itself. An installed project can also involve preparing the ground, building the specified base, transporting materials, cutting and joining the turf, securing edges, and adding the specified infill. A low material price is not directly comparable with a contractor’s completed-project price.
The calculator labels the estimate as an installation planning range and lists its scope beside the result. Where the source model provides a bundled installation rate, we keep it bundled. We do not invent separate material and labor shares or add a second charge for work already included in the base rate.
Why the surface underneath matters
The grass you see is only one part of the proposed system. Ask installers to describe the base materials, preparation, drainage approach, and finishing details in writing. A price that omits substantial ground work may look attractive but leave a different project for you to pay for later.
An existing lawn, bare ground, and a previously built surface are not interchangeable starting points. Removing material, correcting levels, or addressing drainage can change the work required. This calculator does not inspect your site or design the base; significant site correction belongs in a separate contractor assessment.
Installed area is not the same as purchased turf
Measure the finished footprint first. For simple rectangular spaces, multiply length by width; for several connected sections, measure each without counting overlaps. Leave permanent beds and hardscape out of the total unless those areas are also part of the replacement project.
Turf is supplied in rolls with particular widths. Direction, seams, curves, and offcuts can affect how much material must be purchased. A percentage allowance is only a rough quantity aid, not a cutting layout. Confirm the supplier’s roll dimensions and ask the installer to explain the planned seams before approving an order.
What can move a local quote?
Compare the actual specified product, intended use, and installation scope. A pet area, decorative lawn, and putting surface may call for different systems. This general lawn estimator does not price specialty performance requirements, putting-green construction, or every available product tier.
Access and project shape also matter. Moving materials through a narrow passage, making numerous cuts, or working around fixed objects can create work that a simple area multiplication cannot describe. Removal, haul-away, delivery, and contractor minimums should be discussed explicitly rather than assumed from the headline unit price.
Compare quotes without counting the same work twice
Give each installer the same measured area and a short description of the site. Ask for the product name, preparation scope, base specification, seam and edge treatment, infill where applicable, cleanup, and exclusions. Keep any optional work separate so you can compare like with like.
If a local installed unit rate already includes base preparation or infill, do not add those costs again. Likewise, replacing the calculator’s base rate with your own quote should replace that rate, not sit on top of it. Taxes, permits, drainage redesign, and other excluded work still need checking against the written proposal.
Consider the alternative before choosing the surface
For the same lawn footprint, compare sod installation costs if living grass is an option. Installation budgets are only one part of the decision. Consider how the space will be used and the care each surface needs; this tool does not claim that artificial turf eliminates maintenance or guarantees lifetime savings.
Use the backyard cost comparison when deciding how much space to keep as lawn and how much to use as a paved sitting area. Review the pricing method and limitations before treating any national planning range as a final purchasing budget.
Common questions
Is the displayed price for turf only or full installation?
The default calculator uses a professional installed planning rate. Read the listed inclusions and exclusions for its exact scope. A retail grass-roll price is a material-only figure and should not be compared directly with that installed range.
Does turf waste increase every part of the job cost?
No. Purchased material and installed footprint are different quantities. Extra material may be required by the cutting layout, while the finished lawn area stays the same. In a bundled installation model, do not separately apply a material-waste markup to the entire price without a clear basis.
Is artificial turf maintenance-free?
Do not budget on that assumption. Ask the selected product supplier for care instructions and discuss the intended use with the installer. This calculator covers installation planning only and does not estimate cleaning, repair, eventual replacement, or lifetime savings.
Can this estimate a putting green or sports field?
No. Specialty performance surfaces need their own specification and pricing. Get a project-specific proposal rather than applying a general residential artificial-lawn rate to a specialty system.
